For the last 12 years wilderness retreats have been held in the awesome bush clad rugged wilderness of New Zealand, forming an essential part of the education for sustainability of a generation of New Zealand environmental management and natural resources engineering students. These same wilderness retreats are now available to the wider community. The wilderness retreats are a Rite-of-Passage into the path of sustainable development: to find vision, understanding, practical knowledge and practical skills. The Eastern Orthodox Christian path of hesychia (dynamic stillness) and philokalia (the love of beauty and truth) form the basis for the Rite-of-Passage. They are facilitated by Rev. Dr Keith Morrison, a spiritual director and theologian of a meditative tradition (Eastern Orthodox Christianity), a researcher and author on sustainable development (human ecology, indigenous knowledge, ecological engineering and community development), with mountain craft and safety skills.
